WHAT SHOULD YOU SWEAR WITH?

Published

on

All praise and adoration are due to ALLAH, the one who is perfect without flaws, may the peace and blessing of ALLAH be upon the noble Prophet Muhammad–may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – his household, companions and those who trail his footsteps until the last day.
It is so pathetic and worrisome to see one who believes in the oneness of ALLAH and other articles of faith to still engage in shirk, whether knowingly or unknowingly. As ALLAH mentioned in His the Qur’an, Surah Al-Baqara, Verse 8:
وَمِنَ النَّاسِ مَن يَقُولُ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَبِالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَمَا هُم بِمُؤْمِنِينَ
“And there are some people who say: We believe in Allah and the last day, and they are not at all believers.”
Before the advent of Prophet Muhammad–may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him – and his preaching to Islam (Tawheed) many were on wrongdoings whether in speech or actions which makes them fell into major or minor shirk. One of the things that people do indulge into before Islam was swearing with what is not permissible like; Sun, idols, moon, etc.
Allah may swear by whatever he creates that, but creatures are not permitted to swear other than their Allah. The eminent companion, Abdullah ibn Umar in a hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings of ALLAH be upon him) said: “Whoever swears by something other than Allah is guilty of shirk.” (Reported by Imam Ahmad, 2/125; see Sahih al-Jaami, 6204). It deduced from this report that it is not permissible to swear by anything other than Allah.
Swearing other than ALLAH varies according to society, and different community has what they swear with, which is not allowed according to the Shari’a and which a believer must never indulge in. In a society which we find ourselves, Nigeria as an example which comprises of different believes like; Islam, Christianity, and Traditional beliefs (worshipping of idols). We see Muslims swear with what is not allowed, which can be tagged to the religion, as mentioned earlier. People swear with things like; Ogun, Oya, Sango, Aje, Osun Osogbo, Grave, Sheik so, and so, the seven heavens, Kabbah, etc. All these are haram things to swear with. It is so disheartening nowadays to find Muslims swearing with what will take them out of the fold of Islam if care is not entertaining.
As for a Muslim, what is only permissible for us is to swear by ALLAH without associating anything with Him by our speech or actions. Ibn Umar reported that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: “Allah has prohibited that you should swear by your fathers. If anyone swears, let him swear by Allah or else remain silent.” (Reported by al-Bukhari; see al-Fath, 11/530). It can be deduced from this hadith that to remain silent when one wants to swear is better to declare other than ALLAH.
