Moral & Ethics

BismiLlahir Rahmānir Raheem.
All praises and adorations belong to Allah, the Lord of the worlds, the Most Beneficent, the entirely Merciful. May His choicest blessing be showered upon the soul of the seal of Messengers, Muhammad- the son of Abdullah, his household, his companions and those who uphold the truth until the Last Day.

Marlianism as a social ideology originates from a Nigerian music star known by the stage name: Naira Marley. Marlianism has been in existence for a couple of years but gained prominence when the exponent- Naira Marley was kept in the Economic And Financial Crime Commission (EFCC)’s custody over an allegation of fraud, it was as though he’s being held in custody by the EFCC was a significant surge to his career as his ephemeral detention led to a noticeable increase in his fanbase, as virtually everyone is now conversant with the term “Marlian”.

Marlian, which represents a supporter of Naira Marley, is associated with a lot of morally reprehensible acts. It has gotten to the point where every morally bankrupt person will gladly identify as a Marlian. It is rather miserable that as much as non-Muslims, some nominal Muslims alike share his ideology. Why should a Muslim become a follower of a person who is clearly uninterested in manners? It may interestingly dismay you to know that having “No mannaz” (no manners) is an important requirement of being a Marlian. From not using a belt for your trousers (as a man) when you’re supposed to deviating from every act that accords with moral uprightness are the quickest way to identify a Marlian. Marlianism is clear disobedience to the prophet (peace be upon him) as the prophet said in an authentic hadith contained in the forty (40) ahadith of Imam An Nawāwi (May Allah have mercy on him): “إذا لم تستحيي فاصع ما شئت
If you do not have shame, then do whatever you please”. Consequently, being a Marlian is a disobedience to Allah (‘Azza wa jalla) because of من يطيع الرسول فقد أطاع الله
Whoever obeys the prophet has indeed obeyed Allah (An Nisai, verse 80) the reverse understanding (mafhum al mukhālafah) of this is whoever disobeys the prophet has indeed disobeyed Allah.

It may surprise you to know that the originator of Marlianism himself is a Muslim, although nominal just like his undiscerning Muslim followers. Does that make him worthy of followership? The answer is: not for all the tea in China (NEVER!). It’s not wrong to have a role model on worldly affairs, most notably the ones that are primarily connected to our survival but within the confines of Shariah. More, the prophet (peace be upon him) has been endorsed by Allah to be the worthiest of emulation: لقد” كان لكم فى رسول الله أسوة حسنة
Certainly, you’ve in the Apostle of Allah an excellent exemplar” (Ahzab, 21). Indeed, we can never exhaust the followership of the prophet (peace be upon him) and likewise the pious predecessors as much as our religion, and even personal life is concerned. Why then should you, a Muslim, become a Marlian?

You should not become a Marlian for a simple reason (Although connected to other rights) that; the founder is inviting the disobedience of Allah, in that he’s a musician and music itself is Haram as it takes one away from the remembrance of Allah- “و من الناس من يشتري لهو الحديث ليضل عن سبيل الله
And of mankind is he who purchases idle talks (i.e. music, singing, etc.) to mislead (men) from the Path of Allah…” (Luqman, 6). And undoubtedly, music is central to other evils such as Zina, alcoholism, drugs e.t.c. As a matter of fact, Naira Marley on social media exemplifies the content of his songs which are mostly obscenity. Unfortunately, the followers hasten to give them wide publicity, no matter how lewd, no thing how morally condemnable. In fact, Naira Marley identifies proudly as a proficient smoker and by implication, amongst a host of other abnormalities, to be a Marlian, you must either be a smoker or find nothing wrong in smoking.

To be a Marlian as established in the preceding means you must be shameless, if not the most shameless person. If you find any shameless being on the internet, refer to them as a Marlian and watch how they enthusiastically blush at what appears to them as a compliment. Marlianism is the reason why most Muslim ladies (although nominal) are devoid of hayaa (shyness) and are loose with men both on and offline, neglecting the assertion of ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) that the most attractive characteristic is shyness (Adaabus Sharee’ah, 344/2). Shyness has been confirmed to be one of the branches of faith as reported in a hadith of Ibn ‘Umar (May Allah be pleased with them): Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed by a man of the Ansar who was admonishing his brother regarding shyness. Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Leave him alone, for modesty is a part of Iman.”
[Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. As a Muslimah, if ‘Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) is not fit to be your role model, then whom do you take a role model?

Finally, to be a Marlian is tantamount to failing woefully at being an ideal Muslim. This is given credence to by a verse of the Quran wherein Allah says:
You are the best of the nations raised up for (the benefit of) men; you enjoin what is right and forbid the wrong and believe in Allah, and if the followers of the Book had thought it would have been better for them; of them (some) are believers, and most of them are a transgressor.” (Aali Imrān, 110).
This informs us that enjoining good and repelling evil makes a Muslim special and distinguishes him from most people of other faiths. But what happens when a Muslim abandons this divine duty and, in turn, becomes the very perpetrator of the vices he is meant to forbid in the first place?

Marlianism indeed is an unbridled cankerworm, as the fanbase of the exponent is gaining more strength by the day; and this poses a severe threat to the Muslims, most notably the ones who have been enslaved to this uncivil ideology as it is disastrous to their faith, which is the essence of their existence in the first place (Ad dhariyat, 56).
May Allah enable us to see the truth as truth and give us the ability to follow it. May He let us see falsehood as falsehood and give us the ability to do away with it.

May Allah restore the sanity of those who have been enslaved to Marlianism. May He increase us in guidance and cause to die not just as Muslims but also upon the Sunnah of Muhammad (may the blessings of Allah be upon him).
سبحانك اللهم وبحمدك أشهد أن لا إله إلا أنت أسغفرك و أتوب إليك
